Garth Saloner is an American economist and academic who was born on July 23, 1951, in South Africa. He is best known for his work in the areas of strategy, organizational behavior, and entrepreneurship. Saloner earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Cape Town, and his Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University.
In 1992, Saloner joined the faculty at Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he spent his entire academic career, eventually becoming the Philip H. Knight Professor and Dean of the school. He was widely praised for expanding the school's global reach, creating new educational programs, and increasing enrollment.
Saloner's research has focused on innovation, technology strategy, and the role of entrepreneurship in the economy. He has authored numerous influential papers in academic journals, and has co-authored several books, including Strategic Management, The Art of Innovation, and Strategic Management Of Technology And Innovation.
In recent years, Saloner's career has been clouded by controversy. In 2015, he resigned as Dean of the Stanford Graduate School of Business following allegations of a romantic relationship with a subordinate. In 2018, he was named in a lawsuit alleging that he and other senior Stanford officials conspired to cover up sexual misconduct by a former Stanford professor.
